Technology · Terrain, rock and caves

Carve the land in the editor.

Cliffs, canyons and caves are carved in the editor with brushes, then given stone that matches the light. No outside 3D tools.

01 · The form

Read the shape first.

A canyon wall starts as plain grey, so you can read the shape without the colour fooling you: the big ledges, the layers, the places the rock overhangs. Brushes push, pull, cut and smooth.

02 · Layers

Ledges and undercuts, from below.

Look up from the canyon floor and the layers stack the way sandstone does, with undercuts where softer rock wore away.

03 · Stone

Rock that never shows its seams.

A cliff covered in one repeating rock picture gives itself away from across a valley: you can count the tiles. Arcwright breaks the repeat on every rock surface by default and adds large-scale variation on top, so a cliff a hundred metres long never shows the same patch twice. Drag to compare the same cliff in Hollowreach.

04 · Caves

Holes right through the terrain.

Terrain can have holes in it, so a cave is a real tunnel through the land, not a separate model dropped on top. Inside, the rock wraps round you, and glowing crystals light the chamber.

05 · Whole ranges

Mountains on every horizon.

The same tools work at the scale of a world. In Hollowreach the land runs out to snow-capped mountains and a plateau, with the raider camp at its foot, all of it terrain you can walk to.
